Choosing shelf brackets
The right shelf brackets do two jobs: they hold the shelf securely and they set the style of the whole wall. Decorative cast iron brackets make a feature of the support, wooden brackets add warmth, and floating shelf brackets disappear entirely for a clean, minimal look.
Getting the size right
As a rule, a bracket should support at least two thirds of the shelf's depth. For a 20 cm deep shelf, look for brackets of around 15 cm or more. For long shelves, add a bracket roughly every 60 to 80 cm to prevent sagging, and more often if the shelf will hold books.
Fixing them securely
Shelves carry more weight than people expect. Use fixings suited to your wall, fix into studs or masonry wherever possible, and choose heavy duty shelf brackets for books, kitchen storage and deep shelves.
