Choosing the right coat hooks

Count the coats you need to hang, then add two. Hooks fill up faster than you think, especially in winter. For a busy family hallway, a rack with five or more hooks keeps everything in one line. For a small space, a few individual wall hooks spaced along the wall can work better, and a coat rack with a shelf adds storage for hats and keys without taking up floor space.

Fitting your hooks

Always use fixings suited to your wall. Solid brick and stone need masonry plugs, while plasterboard needs cavity fixings or, ideally, a stud behind. Heavy winter coats put real weight on a hook, so fix into something solid wherever you can.
